에이번 유 (Avan Yu), 피아노

캐나다를 대표하는 피아니스트 중 한 사람으로 손꼽히는 에이번 유(Avan Yu)는 The West Australian로부터 “화려한 기교”를, La Presse로부터 “놀라울 만큼 섬세한 표현력”을 지녔다는 찬사를 받았다. 유럽, 북미, 아시아, 호주 등지에서 활발한 연주 활동을 펼치고 있으며, 카네기홀(Carnegie Hall), 암스테르담 콘서트헤보우(Concertgebouw), 베를린 필하모니(Philharmonie in Berlin), 파리 살 코르토(Salle Cortot in Paris), 시드니 오페라 하우스(Sydney Opera House) 등 세계 유수의 공연장에서 무대에 섰다.

에이번 유는 여러 저명 오케스트라와 30여 곡 이상의 피아노 협주곡을 협연해온 연주자로, 캐나다 국립 예술 센터 오케스트라,  밴쿠버 심포니 오케스트라, 빅토리아 심포니 오케스트라, 노바스코샤  심포니, 시드니 심포니 오케스트라, 오클랜드 필하모니아, 홍콩 필하모닉 오케스트라, 드레스덴 필하모니 등과 협연하였다. 또한 얍 판 츠베덴(Jaap van Zweden), 핀커스 주커만(Pinchas Zukerman), 라파엘 프뤼베크 데 부르고스 (Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos), 브램웰 토비(Bramwell Tovey), 크리스티안 아르밍(Christian Arming), 후 안호 메나(Juanjo Mena), 요요 마(Yo-Yo Ma), 요하네스 모저(Johannes Moser) 등 세계적인 지휘자 및 음 악가들과 협업하였다. 특히 2021년 얍 판 츠베덴이 지휘하는 홍콩 필하모닉 오케스트라와의 데뷔 협연 이후, 2022년 시즌 개막 협연자로 다시 초청되어 판 츠베덴과 호흡을 맞추었다.

2008년 스페인에서 열린 제16회 팔로마 오셰아 산탄데르 국제 피아노 콩쿠르에서 은메달과 청중상을 수상하며 국제적인 주목을 받았고, 같은 해 미주리 남부 국제 피아노 콩쿠르에서 1위를 차지하였다. 또한 17 세의 나이로 캐나다 쇼팽 피아노 콩쿠르 역사상 최연소 우승자로 기록되었으며, 2012년에는 시드니 국제 피아노 콩쿠르에서 1위와 9개의 특별상을 동시에 수상하였다.

그는  호라시오 구티에레즈(Horacio Gutiérrez), 클라우스 헬비히(Klaus Hellwig), 케네스 브로드웨이 (Kenneth Broadway), 랄프 마컴(Ralph Markham), 컷 카우 섬(Kut Kau Sum)에게 사사하였으며, 독일 베를린 예술대학교(Universität der Künste Berlin)에서 최고연주자과정(Konzertexamen)을 졸업하고, 미국 맨해튼 음악대학교(Manhattan School of Music)에서 음악박사학위(Doctor of Musical Arts)를 취득하였 다. 박사 논문은 피아노 왼손과 오케스트라를 위한 한스 아브라함센(Hans Abrahamsen)의 작품 《Left, alone》을 주제로 하였으며, 이 작품의 캐나다 초연을 토론토 에스프리 오케스트라와 지휘자 알렉스  포크 (Alex Pauk)의 지휘로 진행하였다.

리스트가 편곡한 피아노 독주곡인 슈베르트의 《겨울 나그네(Winterreise)》와  《백조의 노래 (Schwanengesang)》를 낙소스(Naxos) 레이블로 발매하여 Gramophone, American Record Guide, Fono Forum 등의 전문 매체로부터 호평을 받았다.

연주 활동 외에도, 에이번 유는 젊은 세대의 공연 예술 참여 확대와 창의적인 공연 기획을 통해 공연 문화의 저변을 넓히는 것을 목표로 하는 무제웨스트 콘서트 협회(Muzewest Concerts Socierty)의 예술 및 집 행 감독을 맡고 있다. 또한 WPTA 청소년 콘서트 아티스트 국제 피아노 콩쿠르, 캐나다 쇼팽 피아노 콩쿠르 등의 심사위원으로 활동했으며, 다수의 국제 음악제 및 콩쿠르에 심사위원으로 초청받고 있다. 그동안 베를린  예술대학교에서  피아노  강사로  재직했으며,  2025년  8월부터  미국  신시내티  대학교(University  of Cincinnati) 피아노과 조교수로 부임할 예정이다.

Avan Yu, piano

One of Canada’s most compelling pianists, Avan Yu has been praised for his “glittering virtuosity” (The West Australian) and “astonishing sensitivity” (La Presse). He has performed extensively across Europe, North America, Asia, and Australia, appearing at prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Philharmonie in Berlin, Salle Cortot in Paris, and the Sydney Opera House.

As a sought-after guest soloist, Yu has performed over thirty different piano concertos with leading ensembles including the National Arts Centre Orchestra of Canada, Vancouver Symphony, Victoria Symphony, Symphony Nova Scotia, Sydney Symphony, Auckland Philharmonia, Hong Kong Philharmonic, and Dresden Philharmonic. He has collaborated with renowned conductors and musicians such as Jaap van Zweden, Pinchas Zukerman, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Bramwell Tovey, Christian Arming, Juanjo Mena, Yo-Yo Ma, and Johannes Moser. Following his acclaimed debut with Jaap van Zweden and the Hong Kong Philharmonic in 2021, Yu was immediately re- engaged as featured soloist for the orchestra’s 2022 season-opening concerts, once again under van Zweden’s baton.

Yu first gained international recognition in 2008 with top honors at the XVI Paloma O’Shea Santander International Piano Competition in Spain, where he received the Silver Medal and Audience Prize. That same year, he claimed First Prize at the Missouri Southern International Piano Competition. At 17, he became the youngest competitor ever to win the Canadian Chopin Piano Competition. In 2012, he won First Prize at the Sydney International Piano Competition of Australia, along with nine special awards.

His principal teachers include Horacio Gutiérrez, Klaus Hellwig, Kenneth Broadway, Ralph Markham, and Kut Kau Sum. Yu graduated from the Universität der Künste Berlin with a Konzertexamen degree and earned his Doctor of Musical Arts from the Manhattan School of Music in New York. His doctoral thesis focused on Hans Abrahamsen’s Left, alone for piano left hand and orchestra—a work of which he gave the Canadian premiere with the Esprit Orchestra and conductor Alex Pauk in Toronto.

Yu’s recording of Liszt’s piano transcriptions of Schubert’s Winterreise and Schwanengesang, released by Naxos, received glowing reviews from critics at Gramophone, American Record Guide, and Fono Forum.

In addition to his performing career, Yu serves as Artistic and Executive Director of Muzewest Concerts Society, an organization dedicated to advancing youth engagement with the performing arts and expanding the reach of live music through innovative programming. He has served on the juries of competitions such as the WPTA Young Concert Artists International Piano Competition and the Canadian Chopin Piano Competition and is frequently invited to adjudicate at international festivals and competitions. He has taught as Lecturer of Piano at the Berlin University of the Arts. Beginning in August 2025, he will assume his post as Assistant Professor of Piano at the University of Cincinnati.
